Where oh where do you go for Vietnamese and Chinese lunches?
Dorchester, of course!
Over the past week, one day for the Davidson-Bean household was Vietnamese food day and two were Chinese food days. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures on Viet Day, though I can at least tell you what we had in our delivery from King Do in Fields Corner, right next to the new Dot Block: Gỏi Cuốn (better known to those of us who don’t speak Vietnamese as fresh spring rolls with peanut sauce), Cánh Gà Chiên (chicken wings, of course), Bún Riêu (Saigon’s vermicelli soup with tomato, shrimp, pork and crab-meat), Bún Thịt Heo Nướng (grilled BBQ pork), and Ðăc Biět (Bánh Mì).
It’s tough typing all those diacritics, and I’m told that it’s tougher to pronounce them. At least that’s what they say (“they” being those with even more training in linguistics than I had in my undergrad and grad school studies). Ignoring all that, the food was delicious and King Do is highly recommended.
And how about those Chinese lunch days? We ordered dim sum twice — once from Chau Chow on Morrissey Blvd, once from Winsor Cafe across the river in Quincy. (I know, it’s not Dot, but you can see Dot from its roof, as Sarah Palin didn’t say.) This time I have pictures, from which I hope it’s obvious what’s what — even though I learned over and over again that “obvious” is the most dangerous word in mathematics. Fortunately, this isn’t mathematics.
First, before the yummy food, an establishing shot from the window next to our table (to help those who are unfamiliar with Chau Chow’s location, right across from the gas tank and the Expressway Toyota dealer):
