If you don’t love this book… what’s wrong with you?

Christine Lavin has been one of my favorite singer-songwriters for forty-odd years (some odder than others). I most recently saw her in concert three months ago, and that inspired me to read her memoir, Cold Pizza for Breakfast. Even though it comes in at a hefty 420 pages, I read every word and enjoyed the entire book. It is funny, touching, informative, and full of fascinating anecdotes about the music world. A few readers complained about what they saw as endless name-dropping, but that’s actually part of the point: not that Christine knows everybody, but that the world of folk music and related genres is deeply intertwingled.

The publisher bills this book as a “series of road trips and adventures,” and that’s one way to look at it. But I don’t think it’s the best way. IMHO you really should look at it as a glimpse into Christine’s life and career as you meet the scores of people who have influenced her. After you finish the book — and only after — you need to read the afterword.

Have fun!
