Every day, it seems, I read something by or about two of our distinguished politicians: J.D. Vance and Wes Moore.
Well, one of them is distinguished; the other is, well… what are the appropriate adjectives to describe someone who has made a name for himself (literally) in so many nefarious ways? Names play an odd role in this story. In both cases I first “met” them through books that they wrote, not through their political achievements (or whatever you want to call their political accomplishments).
Let’s start with our current vice president. Six years ago (August 7, 2017, to be precise) I posted a review of Hillbilly Elegy, by a man who calls himself J.D. Vance, though his birth name had been James Donald Bowman. Please read it (the review, not the book). At the time I couldn’t have known that in a little over seven years this man would become the vice president of the United States, but everything I wrote then stands today.
Next we get to Wes Moore (currently governor of Maryland, in case you’ve been on Mars recently). Just over 14 years ago I reviewed his book, The Other Wes Moore. Again, please read my review. But this time I also recommend reading the book.
While I would never say that people can’t change, I’m struck by seeing how my earlier views of these two politicians are in fact unchanged. Maybe the 2028 presidential race will be between the two of them. I would never tell you who to vote for.
