For our last movie of the vacation, Barbara and I watched How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, a British comedy from 2008. Being all about celebrities and Vanity Fair magazine, it is not really my cup of tea, though it was well acted and is certainly amusing in places. I’m a bit mystified at Roger Ebert’s 3.5-star review, since the maximum he gives is 4 stars and he doesn’t do that very often — I count a grand total of five times out of a couple of hundred recent movies. It doesn’t seem worth four stars. But of course this is Ebert’s world, not mine, so what do I know? I don’t even know exactly what it means that the movie is “based” on a supposedly “true” memoir…so to what extent is it merely a work of fiction? Oh well.
