Les Miz in Boston

Unfortunately I was just so disappointed!

Les Miz is one of my three favorite musicals, and I had never seen a professional live performance of it. (I’d seen the movie, and I’d seen an excellent high-school performance.) So I had really been looking forward to seeing the Broadway in Boston production at the Opera House. But, as I said, I was disappointed.

The first problem was the sound system: I could hear only about 20% of the words! Perhaps that was just me, not the Opera House’s over-amplified sound system, as I’ve lost a lot of my hearing in my left ear. I will let you know when I find it.

The second problem was the cast. I suppose I had been expecting Lea Salonga and Alfie Boe, but that sure isn’t what we got. This was a cast of no-name pros whose heart just wasn’t in it. They seemed to be going through the motions, alas.

Before we go, I should explain my “one of my three favorite musicals” remark at the top of my second paragraph above. You’re probably wondering what the other two are. The answer is West Side Story in first place, and My Fair Lady in second — except on days when it’s My Fair Lady in first place and West Side Story in second.
