Bred

Yes, despite being a restaurant, it’s spelled Bred, not Bread.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, you also need to know that there are two branches: Bred Gourmet, in Lower Mills, Dorchester; and Bred Bar, in Cambridge. Barbara and I decided to give Bred Gourmet a try today.

Though primarily a takeout burger joint, Bred does have a couple of dine-in tables (literally just a couple) and a small counter. Barbara and I grabbed one of the tables. Firewood piled up a few yards away reminds you that the feature is a smoked burger. Several varieties are available, but I stuck with the traditional Bred Classic: a delicious all-beef burger with applewood-smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickle, American cheese, and house-made aioli. Although they recommend the default medium as a temperature, they cooked mine rare as ordered without complaint. I also had a generous side of genuine onion rings.

You might be expecting a carnivore menu, but Barbara actually had a Cobb salad, described as greens, cucumber, cherry tomato, red onions, sweet red pepper, applewood-smoked bacon, gorgonzola, avocado, and hard-boiled egg. A side of fries came with it. As everything is prepared to order, they were able to customize the salad as Barbara requested, omitting the gorgonzola and cucumber.

Impossible Burgers, a variety of sides, and desserts are also on the menu, as is a small selection of beers and wines!

Drinks are available in a refrigerated case, though they were oddly out of bottled water! Tap water with ice was cheerfully provided. We ordered from the counter, but everything was served to us at the table.

Try it out!
