The Last Samurai

Don’t you just hate it when someone writes a book review without having actually read the book? Of course I’m not going to do that…but I do need to give a preliminary comment about Helen DeWitt’s The Last Samurai (not be confused with any other work by the same name). I already love this novel — only 30 pages in — and I have to cite the fourth sentence on page 1 to show why:

[My father] skipped grades the way other boys skip class, he lectured my grandfather’s flock on carbon 14 and the origin of species, and he won a full scholarship to Harvard at the age of 15.

I’ll write a full review when I’ve completed reading the book.
